Clare Butcher (b.1985, Harare, Zimbabwe) is a curator and writer who cooks. She currently teaches in Fine Art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and is a member of the School of Missing Studies, Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam. Recently she conducted an MFA at the Centre for Curating the Archive, University of Cape Town, South Africa during which time she initiated the Annex Residency Programme in collaboration with the South African National Gallery. Clare completed the de Appel Curatorial Programme in Amsterdam in 2009.
Butcher drew on her ongoing research on the 2nd Johannesburg Biennial. Her presentation Trade Routes was a beginning focused on the themes of that exhibition such as the city as a riff, urban identities in transition, and colonial residues.
