Shared risks for Orchestra #1
For this group workshop, which takes a page out of Young’s artist publication Orchestrations, each participant will be provided with a bird whistle and taught to produce a birdcall using the prop. With their individual birdcalls, the participants will form a temporary collective and orchestra through the mastery and performance of their instruments – the bird whistle.
This workshop is limited to 20 participants. Please kindly register your participation by sending an email to connectingspace.hk@zhdk.ch
3:30 – 5 pm
Screening of Knowledge is the Beginning (2005), 90 min
The afternoon concludes with a screening of Emmy Award-winning documentary Knowledge is the Beginning by Paul Smaczny. This documentary tells the story of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, an orchestra made up of young musicians coming from Egyptian, Iranian, Israeli, Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian, Syrian and Spanish backgrounds who are brought together each summer. Founded in 1990 by Daniel Barenboim and the late Edward Said, the orchestra is an attempt to bring different points of view together through music making. The film chronicles five summer workshops in Weimar and Seville, as well as the concert performed in Ramallah in August, 2005.
Chosen by Young, Biancorosso and Lim, Knowledge is the Beginning is part of Connecting Space Hong Kong’s monthly screening programme, Hazy Sundays.
